There's enough mercury in this one little switch to contaminate a 20 acre lake!
For a period of time, manufacturers used mercury switches like this to control convenience lights and ABS systems.
Although they are no longer being installed in new vehicles, there are about 9 tonnes of mercury switches still in
vehicles on the road today. Switch Out is a national program designed to remove these switches from end-of-life
vehicles and prevent the highly toxic heavy metal from being released into the environment.
ARC is proud to have been a pioneering partner in the Switch Out program since its inception. Our members have
recovered thousands of these switches before they could do harm to our lakes and rivers.
